Local Girl Scout Reminds People to Stay Off The Dunes

Savannah Haines, a local Girl Scout in Westport Troop # 1135, recently placed signs she had designed and built to protect the beach grass at Cherry & Webb Beach.  These grasses hold the dunes together, and provide habitat for local species.  The grasses cannot withstand being trampled, and without them, the dunes would fall apart from erosion.  The signs are made out of durable aluminum and will be able to last through the seasons. The signs read, “FRAGILE AREA PLEASE STAY ON PATH” in green acrylic lettering  to encourage visitors to stay on the main trails and out of the beach grass.

She designed, created, and placed the signs as part of her pursuit for her Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award that a Girl Scout age 11-14 may earn.  Savannah will present her completed project to the Girl Scout Council of Rhode Island for final approval.  With these signs, visitors will be reminded to stay on the paths so the natural habitat will be out of harms way.

Cub Scouts Donate to Ronald McDonald House

The Wolf Cubs of Cub Scout Pack 100 donated 20 pounds of aluminum can tabs to the Ronald McDonald house in Providence.  The boys have been collecting the aluminum can tabs from family and friends for the past two years.  This project has been a way to reinforce the Cub Scout Promise to “…to DO MY BEST, to do my DUTY to GOD and my Country, To HELP other people, …”

Pack 100 Wolf PackThe can tabs were presented to the Ronald McDonald house in Providence.  After collecting the can tabs, the Ronald McDonald house will bring the collection to a recycling center, where they will be weighed to determine their value.  Ronald McDonald House, 45 Gay Street, in Providence was established to create, find and support programs that directly benefit the health of children.

The Boy Scouts of America’s Cub Scouting program is for boys who are in the first through fifth grade.  They participate in family-centered activities, group activities, learning and having fun.  If you would like more information on the Cub Scout Pack 100, contact Cub Master Carol Hegarty at (508) 636-4797 or visit our web site at www.scoutpack100.org.
